KING - Mary Lee "Newsome" Newsome, wife of the late Everette Gray Newsome, died Saturday, April 6, 2002,
at the age of 78 of complications due to recent illness.

Mary Lee was born June 27, 1923, the adopted daughter of Norman Lee and Gladys Mae "Spainhour" Newsome.
She was a mother of five and helped to manage the home and family farm. She later retired from Brady Furniture of Rural Hall.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Everette, and son and daughter-in-law Bobby G. (Annie Lee) Newsome. She is survived
by two sons, Mr. Jerry W. (Bonnie) Newsome Sr. of King and Mr. Glenn W. (Becky) Newsome of Pfafftown;
two daughters, Mrs. Jerry (Catherine "Newsome") Culler of Pfafftown and Mrs. Danny (Rachel "Newsome") Collins of King;

Mary Lee was a true artisan. Her award-winning works of crochet were as much art as function. Many generations of babies
have been clothed in her unforgettable baby outfits and wrapped up in one of her unique blankets. She created each with
the same love and care that she raised her family with. She and her husband shared a love for each other and their family
that is too rare in this world. She was dearly loved and will be dearly missed.

The following was written in Licking County, Ohio, sometime following December of 1880.

The parents of John Messmore were natives of Pennsylvania and came to Ohio in the year 1809, settling in Licking County. Our subject was born in 1908. He is from a family of seven children: Susannah, Mary, Laban, John, Eliza and Rhoda.

Mr. Messmore was brought up to hard labor, and in his youth, learned the business of carding and fulling. At 22 years of age, he came to the neighborhood of Waterloo and established himself in the woolen-mill business and carried it on for 40 years, keeping pace with the many improvements that pertain to the trade in that time. In 1866 he sold his factory to his son, and in 1871, bought the Pancoast Mill's on Deer Creek, above Waterloo, where he has since carried on the flouring business.

He was married in December 13, 1829 to Jerusua, daughter of Isaiah and Lettice Pancoast, born June 4, 1805 and fifty years afterwards, December 13, 1879, celebrated with a multitude of friends their golden wedding. Just one year later, December 13, 1880, his esteemed companion died. They were the parents of seven children who grew to maturity: Mariamie, Flavius J., Alvin L.,Aurelius B., Otis B., Rienzi W., and Francenia. Of these only three survive. Alvin L. married Evaline Leach of this county. He served in the war as captain of Co.G, 113th OVI and was an officer of more than ordinary soldierly bearing. He is now a resident of St. Louis. Arelius B. married Sarah Lindsey and resides in Kansas. Rienzi W. married Mary F. Kelley and resides in Waterloo.

Uncle John Messmore is a man of steady habits and unswerving Christian character. For the past 40 years he has lived a consistent member of the Old School Predestinarian Baptist Church. The society of which he is a member was established at the house of Isaiah Pancoast in the year 1813.

Note:
Burial at Messmore Cemetery and moved to the New Holland Cemetery in the 1960's:
Flavius J. Messmore a son who died August 17, 1863 at 36 years, Jerusua Pancoast Messmore wife of John and daughter of Isaiah & Lettice Pancoast and Mazael who died September 2, 1842 at age 1 year and was son of John & Jerusua Pancoast Messmore.

Walter and his brother "Frank" went to Arizona as young men and had a cattle ranch there for a short time, then Walter returned to Surry County to begin farming. He was blind in his later years, so he strung a wire to lead him from his porch to his outhouse. One day he fell from the porch and died. There are no records of children.

26 "Battles & Biographies of Missourians" by W.L. Webb:
At the beginning of the Civil War Dr. Winfrey was a merchant and a practicing physician at Lone Jack, MO. George B. Weff, who had served with Doniphan in Mexico was a prominent citizen in the same neighborhood. Webb and Winfrey were a David and Jonathan over again. In the summer of 1862 these two men called their mutual friends together and organized them into a Confederate Company. Dr. Winfrey was elected Captain and Webb Lieutenant. In a few days the company had its baptism of fire at the Battle of Lone Jack. After the fight Dr. Winfrey was made surgeon of the Second (Hays) Regiment, with the rank of Major-Lieutenant, Webb became Captain and served in his company capacity until he fell mortally wounded at the battle of Byrun's Ford near Westport, in 1864. As Captain Webb languished with his death wound on the field, Dr. Winfrey took him up and cared for him two weeks until he died, then buried him beside his comrades....

He enlisted as Surgeon in the State Guards, and accompanied Colonel Gideon W. Thompson to Cowskin Prairie. At the Battle of Wilson Creek, his skill as a surgeon was invaluable. He was present at the Battle of Lexington. He spent a part of the winter of 1862 with his family at Lone Jack --- a time full of danger and narrow escapes. In the spring he and Webb organized Company C, which fought the Federals entrenched in his store and in his dwelling adjoining. He led his company against them but was repulsed in a bloody conflict. After falling back, he rallied his men and in a second charge dislodged the enemy and held the bujildings to the end of the fight.

After the Battle of Lone Jack, Dr. Winfrey went south with Hay's command. He was senior surgeon of Shelby's Brigade, and was present at the Battles of Cane Hill, Prairie Grove, and Newtonia. He was at the second Battle of Springfield (January 8, 1863). He sremained here, after the Confederates withdrew, in charge of the hospital until the wounded were able to travel, then he accompanied them as prisoners of war to City Point, Virginia, where they were exchanged.

From City Point he set out to join his command and on his way arrived at Vicksburg, VA, just before the beginning of the siege. He saw the Battle of Champion Hill and Big Black, and was in Vicksburg during the siege. He met and conversed with General Grant. The return trip across the Mississippi River was a dangerous one, but he arrived safe at Price's army in Camp at Camden. He was at the principal battles in the operations against Steel, and in the autumn of 1864 came with the command on Price's great raid.

The wounded at the Battle of Westport required many surgeons and Dr. Winfrey, at the request of General Price, remained to care for his soldiers and dying comrades. He arrived at St. Louis on his way back to the army, when news came that General Lee had surrendered.

After the war, Dr. Winfrey enjoyed a very large practice for years at Pleasant Hill. In 1879 he moved to Kansas City, MO, where he lived and died.
